Day 2 - Quito

Free day Quito

Today you have all day to explore Quito´s highlights by yourself. For example, you can wander through the historical center, listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The beautiful colonial buildings, squares, and many churches are a feast for the eyes and the atmosphere in the center is unique. If visiting the center, you should not skip the impressive Basilica Church, the Independence Square (Plaza Grande), and the church La Compañia, which interior is covered with gold.

For a beautiful view of the city you go by taxi or bus up to Panecillo Hill, and for a spectacular view, you take the Teleferico (a cable car) all the way up to the Pichincha Volcano (4050 meters). From here, you can see the entire city and on a clear day even the surrounding volcanoes, such as the famous Cotopaxi. Another interesting activity is visiting the museum of the Ecuadorian painter Guayasamin.

You will spend the night at Hotel Vieja Cuba.

Included: breakfast, room.

Day 3 - Quito

Free day Quito

Today, you can enjoy Quito at your own space.

You can begin with the Plaza Grande. You will find in its surroundings few of the most important monuments of the country:

Compania de Jesus Church: known colloquially as la Compañía, is a Jesuit church in Quito, Ecuador. It is among the best-known churches in Quito because of its large central nave, which is profusely decorated with gold leaf, gilded plaster, and wood carvings. Inspired by two Roman Jesuit churches — the Chiesa del Gesù (1580) and the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola (1650) — la Compañía is one of the most significant works of Spanish Baroque architecture in South America.

The Basilica del Voto Nacional: is a Roman Catholic Church located in the historic center of Quito, Ecuador. It is the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. You can climb one of its towers from where you will have the opposite panoramic views of Quito, with the Panecillo in the background.

City Museum: just past the 18th-century arch, El Arco de la Reina, built to give shelter to churchgoers, this first-rate museum depicts Quito’s daily life through the centuries, with displays including dioramas, model indigenous homes, and colonial kitchens. The 1563 building itself (a former hospital) is a work of art. Admission includes a free guided tour in Spanish.

Guayasamin museum and Capilla del Hombre: the painter Oswaldo Guayasamín´s La Capilla del Hombre ("The Chapel of Man") occupies a site in Bellavista overlooking the city of Quito, Ecuador. The Capilla is a purpose-built art museum dedicated to the peoples of Latin America. Construction of Guayasamín's masterpiece began in 1995 and unfortunately was not completed until 2002, after his death.

Although this chapel contains fewer pieces of Guayasamín's art than the nearby foundation and museum, the building he designed provides an atmosphere specific to his artwork to view his paintings. The Capilla del Hombre exhibits Guayasamín's work as a history of human suffering and violence in Latin America and the world. It includes sculptures and murals and integrates the surroundings into an artistic interpretation of the subject.

Teleferico (cable-car): for spectacular views over Quito’s mountainous landscape, hop aboard this sky tram that takes passengers on a 2.5km ride (10 minutes) up to the flanks of Volcán Pichincha to the top of Cruz Loma. Once you’re at the top (a mere 4100m), you can hike to the summit of Rucu Pichincha (4680m), about a three-hour hike for fit walkers – some scrambling is required and you should ask about the safety situation before attempting.

You will spend the night at Hotel Vieja Cuba.

Included: breakfast, room.
