The very best way to see and enjoy historic Kuching is from the Sarawak River, the main artery around which the city has grown. Our Sarawak River Cruises (by pontoon boat) give you a view of the city and its surroundings that is impossible to experience from dry land. From the comfort of our purpose-built pontoon boats, you will enjoy unobstructed views of every aspect of traditional life on the river. This cruise takes you past a host of fascinating sights to get a close-up view of traditional life on and around the river. The boat glides past colorful Malay Villages, the elegant city Mosque, the Astana, Fort Margherita and the Kuching Waterfront. Along the way you will see brightly-painted tambangs ferrying passengers, villagers going about their everyday activities, and fishing boats and wooden cargo vessels plying the river. Return to hotel and afternoon at leisure. At 1500 hours, meet your guide at the hotel lobby for a gastronomical tour of Kuching - Kuching Food Trail by Walking (Duration: 4 hrs, 1500-1900 hrs). The food trip tour highlights some of the local dishes that Kuchingites enjoy all day long. Start your street food adventure with a Sarawak Laksa and ice-cold drinks. Across the food court, a humble hawker stall sells the traditional “lek tau suang”, a porridge like dessert which is good for reducing body heat. Walk down the lane towards a small café offering aromatic Sarawak’s gourmet coffee that are blended from fresh coffee beans. Continue towards the Waterfront where you will board a sampan also known as “Penambang” to cross the Sarawak River. This northern part of the city is made-up mostly of Malay kampongs (villages) and unique to their identity, the renowned Sarawak Layer Cake or Kek Lapis can be easily found here, fresh from the oven! Continue your food adventure by visiting to a local coffee shop that are made-up of multiple hawker stalls, each stall offering their own specialty dishes such as kolo mee, tomato kueh tiaw (stir-fried noodle with port & vegetables in a special tomato soup, an original Kuching’s dish) & cha kueh.Take a 10- minute drive to the next stop to sample “kueh chap”, a tasty broth with generous filling of pork meat and organs that is always a favourite among Kuchingites (non-halal). Return to the city centre for the final stop with a sweet dessert, the “gula apong ice cream”. Enjoy the fresh cold ice cream with palm sugar to wrap-up this food journey.
