When it comes to game reserves in South Africa, there’s one in particular that stands out from the crowd like a beacon of light. Shamwari Private Game Reserve, a gem nestled in the Eastern Cape, 75km outside Port Elizabeth, has been rekindling the enchantment of Africa since its inception. It has been voted World’s Leading Safari and Game Reserve and Conservation Company for several consecutive years – and once you visit, you’ll see why.
The history of Shamwari Private Game Reserve
Shamwari Private Game Reserve has established itself as one of the best game reserves in the country, with a longstanding history and connection to the African landscape. The Shamwari project first began in 1992, when a dedicated conservation team started buying up depleted farmland, taking down fences and reintroducing indigenous animals – fast forward thirty years and it’s one of the most sought-after wildlife sanctuaries on the map.
Despite its unparalleled success, the reserve wasn’t always supported. Upon the 30th anniversary of Shamwari, CEO Joe Cloete (who hosted the reserve’s first game drive) recalls the initial skepticism received:
“The Eastern Cape just wasn’t considered a safari destination. So it wasn’t just a case of marketing Shamwari but the entire region. There were also people who didn’t like the idea of reintroducing predator species to the area. In those early days, we spent a lot of time convincing people not only that the project was viable, but also about the benefits of having a big-five game reserve as a neighbour.”
Today, visitors can embrace the reserve’s commitment to conservation, community, and luxury when embarking on a soul-stirring safari adventure.

Boasting a desirable location, Shamwari is situated in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, a captivating region known for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. It’s nestled at the end of the famous and incredibly scenic Garden Route, offering an unforgettable safari experience within easy reach of coastal attractions – meaning visitors will have the best of both worlds.
How to get to Shamwari Private Game Reserve?
The nearest airport to Shamwari Game Reserve is Port Elizabeth International Airport, which is just a 1.5-hour drive away. Numerous domestic flights connect Port Elizabeth to major cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. You can also arrange a shuttle transfer to the park or rent a car – which is particularly handy if you wish to explore the natural beauty along the Garden Route.
Best time to visit Shamwari Private Game Reserve
Shamwari is a year-round destination and each season offers a unique experience. December to February (dry season) is the most popular time to visit the reserve, since the lack of water in the bush drives animals to open water sources, making them much easier to spot!
Climate and Temperature
South Africa is a typically sunny country and boasts a wonderful climate, with minimal rainfall year-round. You can expect warm summers (December to February) averaging between 20-30°C – the most popular time for tourists to visit – and mild winters (June to August) ranging from 5-20°C. Spring, which falls between September and October, is also a lovely time to visit when the weather is pleasant (averaging around 20°C) and the days start to lengthen towards the end of the season. Plus, many wildlife babies are born in spring, making it an extra special time to visit the private reserves.
Wildlife and Habitats
Shamwari offers a unique blend of flora and fauna, housing an incredible variety of wildlife. The diverse ecosystem supports a plethora of species, allowing visitors to experience the wonders of the African bush up close. The park is home to all big safari animals, including the Big Five, while both black and white rhino’s and Lion and Antelope sightings are fairly common. If you keep your eyes peeled, you could catch a glimpse of everything from leopards to cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, impalas, warthogs, hyenas, and hippos!
Maintaining diverse habitats with different physical and chemical characteristics is crucial for wildlife, as it ensures the survival of different sets of species. It supports healthy ecosystems, encourages genetic diversity, and allows for the natural balance of predators and prey – contributing to overall environmental stability.
The reserve is passionate about the conservation of nature, wildlife and their habitats, supporting multiple conservation efforts including anti-poached initiatives, habitat restoration projects, community education, and beyond. The Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre helps to care for sick, injured, abandoned or orphaned animals under the care of the veterinary team before releasing them back into their natural habitat. As part of the safari experience, guests can visit the centre and learn more about their favourite animals – more on this later.
The reserve also partners with Virgina McKenna’s Born Free Foundation with its Animal Rescue and Education Centres, housing rescued lions and leopards. The centre aims to create awareness of how wildlife, in particular big cats, are exploited in captivity around the world and encourages donations.
Finally, the Shamwari Conservation Experience also welcomes adventure-seekers to take part in a volunteering programme at the reserve – so it’s safe to say it’s doing its part for the environment!
