10 Nights Masai Mara To Mombasa Through Rift Valley

This is a short but extremely rewarding safari as it allows visitors to gain firsthand experience of the Great Rift Valley and the vast game-rich plains of the Masai Mara. The Rift Valley lakes are famous for their abundance of flamingos and other waterfowl, while Masai Mara is home to the country’s greatest concentration of wildlife.

Day 1 | Nairobi

Upon arrival into Nairobi, clients will be met and transferred to the Hilton Garden Inn Nairobi Airport.

Overnight at Hilton Garden Inn Nairobi Airport on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 | Nairobi - Masai Mara National Reserve

Travel towards Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the Rift Escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. Look for the charming chapel they built at the foot of the escarpment. Pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station as you head across the valley to Narok; continue your travels across acres of wheat and barley, before reaching the Masai Mara in time for lunch. Following lunch set off on your first game drive, returning to the camp as the sunsets.

Overnight at Sentrim Mara Camp on a full board basis.

Sentrim Mara Camp

Sentrim Mara is located in Maasai Mara Game Reserve, 3 km after the Sekenani gate. The entire 31 tents are spread out in serene surroundings amongst Acacia trees that surround the camp. The main guest area consists of the reception, lounge area, restaurant, and bar. Each of the spacious tents has a modern ensuite bathroom, hot and cold showers, writing desk and an elevated private balcony for spectacular views of the sunsets and the hills, which have abundant wildlife. The tents have personal closets, flush toilets, and sockets for battery charging for cameras. There is power for lighting in every room, a bathroom and flushing toilets.

Day 3 | Masai Mara National Reserve

Following an early breakfast, depart on a morning game drive, returning to the camp mid-morning. After lunch, and perhaps a siesta, set off on another game drive and visit the Masai Village, returning to the camp as the sunsets. (It is possible to pre-book an optional early morning Balloon Safari).

Overnight at Sentrim Mara Camp on a full board basis.

Day 4 | Masai Mara – Lake Nakuru – Lake Elementaita

Leaving the Masai Mara after breakfast travel across the ‘breadbasket’ of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand. Now travel across the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley, keeping an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle as you head up the Mai - Mahiu, before arriving at your lodge at Lake Elementaita around midday. Following lunch, depart for a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, returning to your lodge as the sunsets. The national park, known for its birdlife, offers a possibility to view flamingoes. It is also home to Black and White rhinos as well as the endangered Rothschild Giraffe.

Overnight at Sentrim Elementaita Lodge on a full board basis.

Sentrim Elementaita

Sentrim Elementaita Lodge is located on the shores of flamingos/pelicans fringed Lake Elementaita, which is situated about 120 Kilometers from Nairobi. If you are a bird lover and in search of African safari lodges, then the country lodge is the perfect place for you to experience one of the world’s largest ornithological spectacles.

Day 5 | Lake Elementaita - Nairobi

Following an early breakfast, continue to Lake Naivasha for a boat ride. Leaving the Rift Valley behind, proceed to Nairobi, arriving late morning and transfer to your hotel.

Evening dinner at the famous Carnivore restaurant in Langata with pick up and drop.

The Carnivore Restaurant is one of Africa's greatest eating experiences, made famous for its succulent steaks, barbecue dishes, and great African hospitality. A visit here is an excellent complement to a holiday and makes a perfect spot for welcome or farewell meals. Delicious barbequed and skewered vegetarian meals are also available.

The Great Migration

Each year around the same time, the circular great wildebeest migration begins in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of the southern Serengeti in Tanzania and loops in a clockwise direction through the Serengeti National Park and north towards the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya. This migration is a natural phenomenon determined by the availability of grazing. The initial phase lasts from approximately January to March, when the calving season begins – a time when there is plenty of rain-ripened grass available for the 260,000 zebra that precede 1.7 million wildebeest and the following hundreds of thousands of other plains game, including around 470,000 gazelles.

During February, the wildebeest spend their time on the short grass plains of the southeastern part of the ecosystem, grazing and giving birth to approximately 500,000 calves within a 2 to 3-week period. Few calves are born ahead of time and of these, hardly any survive. The main reason is that very young calves are more noticeable to predators when mixed with older calves from the previous year. As the rains end in May, the animals start moving northwest into the areas around the Grumeti River, where they typically remain until late June. The crossings of the Grumeti and Mara rivers beginning in July are a popular safari attraction because crocodiles are lying in wait. The herds arrive in Kenya in late July / August, where they stay for the remainder of the dry season, except that the Thomson's and Grant's gazelles move only east/west. In early November, with the start of the short rains, the migration starts moving south again, to the short grass plains of the southeast, usually arriving in December in plenty of time for calving in February.

About 250,000 wildebeest die during the journey from Tanzania to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, a total of 800 kilometers (500 mi). Death is usually from thirst, hunger, exhaustion, or predation.
