The resort island of Pangkor is located in the Manjung District of Perak in Malaysia and is home to about 25,000 people. Tourism and Fishing are the islands two main industries. This lesser known Malaysian island is situated on the west coast of Malaysia. It is a small island that has a total surface area of only 8 square kilometers. Previously a popular refuge for fisherman, sailors, merchants and pirates it was also an important point from where trading in the Strait of Melaka was controlled. The island consists of a 17th century Dutch fort that was built to monopolize tin trade in Perak and for the protection of the Perak Chieftain from Acehnese and Siamese invasions. Due to its history with fishing, fish and dried fish products are a major industry on the island. This island is where satay fish originated from.
Pangkor Island is more popular as a local resort with it being very crowded during the weekends and on public holidays but not so much during the week. The state government is putting forth efforts to promote it as a tourist destination for travellers from all over the world. The beaches here are pretty and tranquil and the fishing villages have hardly changed in the past 50 years. The island also boasts of some great local food, mainly of course seafood.
To get into the island you have to do so by plane from Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Kuala Lumpur which offers flights three times a week. Once on the island unmetered taxis otherwise known as microvans are widely available for getting around. These vans are easily recognizable as they are bright pink and are available at the airport. Motorbikes are also an option. Some sights on Pangkor island include the Pangkor Fishing Villages, Marina Island Pangkor, Pangkor Town, Batu Bersurat or Tiger Rock and the only Indian temple on the island the Kali Amman Temple. Pangkor Island is the perfect destination to wind down and relax because of its low-key feel.
