Venice is a unique and romantic destination and is one of Italy’s topmost cities. It is a series of 150 winding canals with 400 bridges connecting 117 bodies of land. It is filled with churches, palaces, squares, museums and shops. The city of Venice is located in the Veneto Region of Italy and is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a strip of land called the Lido. It is divided into six sections otherwise known as sestieri and namely are the Cannaregio, San Marco, Castello, Santa Croce, San Polo and Dorsoduro.
The city has a small airport from which you can take a bus or boat but the best way to arrive in Venice is by train. In Venice itself the main mode of transport is by the boats which are known as vaporetti. If you are looking for a much more romantic way to explore the waterways of Venice then the Gondolas are the best. Venice has many festivals which include the Carnavale celebration which is held 40 days before Easter and is a 10 day street party where everyone wears masks and costumes and the Redentore Regatta which is held on the Grand Canal in July.
The city has multiple attractions and museums and one of the best activities is strolling along the canals off the main tourist track. The highlights and best spots include Saint Mark’s Square, Saint Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge. When it comes to the cuisine, seafood is a big part of the culinary environment here along with polenta and rice. One of the best dishes that is a definite must try is the zuppa di pesce fish soup. Due to its close proximity to the sea, the weather in Venice is usually moderate but there still can be rain nearly all year round. If you want to avoid the crowds the best time to visit is during the spring and fall months.
