Milan

Overview

The capital of the Lombardy region, Milan is Italy’s industrial and financial center. It is a city of global significance. Its many strengths include arts, commerce, design, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, services, research and of course tourism. It is the home of the Italian Stock Exchange and is a major fashion capital of the world and hosts events such as Milan Fashion Week and the Milan Furniture Fair. Attracting over 9 million visitors annually, Milan has multiple museums, theatres and landmarks that include the Milan Cathedral, Sforza Castle and Leonardo Da Vinci paintings like The Last Supper.

Although located in an area that is extremely urbanized, Milan is surrounded by a belt of green areas and has many parks and gardens, two of the largest being Sempione Park which was built in 1890 in the English style and includes the Milan City Aquarium, a steel lattice panoramic tower, an art exhibition center, a Japanese garden and a Public library and Montanelli Gardens which was created in the 18th century and is where you can find Milan’s Natural History Museum and a planetarium.

When it comes to the performing arts, Milan is a major national and international center especially for opera. The La Scala opera house is considered by many to be one of the most prestigious in the world. It has a symphony orchestra and musical conservatory and is an historical center for musical composition and was the birthplace of many composers such as Gioseppe Caimo, Simon Boyleau, Verdi, Paolo Cherici and Alice Edun. Milan has its own local culinary traditions some of which include cotoletta alla Milanese, cassoeula, ossobuco and risotto alla Milanese.  The climate in Milan is very similar to much of the inland plains of Northern Italy. Its humid subtropical climate gives it hot sultry summers and cold foggy winters. For transport, it has five major railway stations, trams and trolley buses.
