The city of Florence is the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany and is the most populated city in the region. During medieval times, Florence was one of the wealthiest cities and is widely considered the birthplace of the Renaissance. Every year 13 million tourists visit Florence’s historic center. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, it is a noted city mainly for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture and monuments. It has multiple museums and art galleries namely the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti. One of the best known sights in Florence is the Santa Maria del Fiore which is a 600 year old dome that was built by Filippo Brunelleschi. This artistic and architectural heritage is why Forbes has ranked it as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
It is also an important city for the fashion world and has been placed in the top 51 fashion capitals of the world. Its climate is humid subtropical with hot summers and cool, damp winters. The River Arno is an important part of the city and spanning it is the Ponte Vecchio or old bridge, the most striking feature of this is the multiple shops that have been built on the edges which are held up by stilts. The busiest time in Florence for tourism is during the months of April to October.
The cuisine in Florence bases a majority of its dishes on meat, mainly tripe and lampredotto which are sold in food carts all through the city. Other dishes include crostini toscani, prosciutto, salame, ribollita, papa al pomodoro, panzanella and bistecca alla fiorentina. Even though it is small, this city must absolutely be on your list of ‘must-see’ places. It is magnetic, romantic and busy.
