Siem Reap caters to every taste and its impossible to get bored in this city that seems to be evolving day by day. Located in northwestern Cambodia it is a popular resort town and tourist destination with multiple hotels and restaurants and is the gate way to the Angkor region. Siem Reap is the most popular destination in Cambodia. Siem Reap gained popularity after the release of the 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie “Tomb Raider” which was filmed here. Ever since then it has gone from a barley paved village that had a few restaurants to a vibrant city filled with luxury resorts all in less than 15 years. It receives over two million tourist arrivals annually.
The best attraction for many of the visitors that come here are the temples. But Siem Reap does offer much more than that. It’s great for backpacking, wining and dining, spas, great shopping and lots of adventure. It seems that every week there is a new bar, restaurant or spa that opens up. It might feel like a sleepy town during the day but is full of life after the sun goes down. For party animals Pub Street is the place to be with two nightclubs and multiple bars and restaurants. If you are looking for a quieter time there are multiple adjoining alleys that host smaller establishments.
Siem Reap has its own airport making it easy to get in and out of the city and is located just 20 minutes from the Centre of Town. The best time to visit would be between November and February when its dry and cool. It starts to get hotter from February to May and June to October are the rainy months bringing floods with it although it can be very beautiful during this time and also have lesser tourists. If you do visit during this time all you will really need is a rain poncho and you will be set.
