Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s capital and also the largest, wealthiest and most populated city in the whole country. The name itself is of a very exotic nature and is a slice of Asia that many daydream about. It was formerly known as Chaktomuk which means Four Faces. It is situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River in the south central region of Cambodia and is the cultural, commercial and political Centre of the country. It is home to 1.5 million people and was once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’. Some of the cultural and historical attractions that can be found here include temples, museums, the Royal Palace and a variety of comfortable accommodation from guesthouses to five star hotels. The city offers great dining options and a happening nightlife. It is a capital that assaults your senses with the sounds of life and pungent scents. Its café’s, bars and food scene are truly world class.
The climate in Phnom Penh is of a tropical nature with wet and dry seasons. It usually has hot weather all year with some minor changes in between such as the southwest and northeast monsoons.
The arts and music scene are also making a comeback especially in the capital. It is host to many music events that feature indie bands and continue to increase in number. For the arts, two of the most visited museums are the National Museum and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum which was once the Khmer Rouge Prison. Phnom Penh is a city that even after been impacted by war and revolution has still managed to rise up out of the ashes as one of the hippest capitals in the region.
