Located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a country that has had a dark past yet has been successful in rising up and revealing all of its attractions and warmth that has been hidden for so long. It is a great travel destination especially if you are travelling with children and there is much to experience. Planning on visiting Cambodia? Here are a few tours and excursions that might be keen on experiencing.
For small groups there is the Angkor Temples Tour which is a full day tour that starts at Siem Reap and takes you through all of the magnificent temples. These include the iconic Angkor Wat the masterpiece of the Khmer empire, the Bayon Temple with the smiling stone faces, with a lunch stop at the Sras Srang – the Royal Baths. The tour ends at the beautiful Ta Prohm where tree roots lace around the ruins. It’s a great tour if you want to see the highlights of the temples in one day.
Another small group tour is ‘Historical Phnom Penh’. The tour lasts for half a day and follows some of the most tragic times of the 20th century. It takes you through the rise and fall of the Khmer Rouge and how Cambodia has been rebuilt afterwards. The tour begins with you learning about April 17, 1975 which was the day that Phnom Penh was taken by the Khmer Rouge. You will visit the Tuol Sleng High School which became the S – 21 prison camp during this period. It has now been converted into the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and shows the brutality of the Khmer Rouge through photos and memorabilia. The tour also goes through Choeung Ek and the Killing Fields where many were killed and buried. The tour gives great insight into the nature of Asian Political History and how Cambodian people have struggled in the past. The tour ends with sampling of local snacks.
The Siem Reap Street Food Tour is especially for all the foodies out there. It is a 3 hour long evening tour that is an exploration of Cambodian cuisine. You are accompanied by a special guide in a motorized rickshaw and can sample a variety of delicious and authentic local snacks such as skewered meat, duck eggs and if you are a bit adventurous fried crickets. Tours are limited to 12 people.
