French Polynesia is five groups of islands, namely The Society Island, The Tuamotu Archipelago, The Gambier Islands, The Marquesas Islands and The Austral islands. Collectively 118 islands and atolls, only 67 of these are inhabited. A part of the Society Islands, Tahiti is the most populous island in the territory. French Polynesia was one of the last places in the world to be settled by humans. The islands here take up a total land area of 3521 square kilometers which are spread out over 2000 kilometers of ocean. Other than Tahiti, some other islands and atolls are Ahe, Bora Bora, Hiva Oa, Maupiti and Nuku Hiva.
All the major islands have well developed tourist facilities. Also something that French Polynesia is famous for is its reef break waves making it a great surf spot. One of the best places is Teahupo o which is the most renowned and has been regularly ranked as having the best waves in the world. Here is where the annual Billabong Pro Tahiti surf competition is held. Kitesurfing is another famous activity in French Polynesia with the most iconic spots for this being Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Maupiti and Raivavae. Also internationally known for diving, divers have opportunities in each archipelago with Rangiro and Fakarava being the most popular. It really is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
